KAPN NEWS: Congratulations Dr. Melissa Oropeza!!
**She is the 1st nurse practitioner to be elected to the Kansas House of Representatives!
Dr. Melissa Oropeza was born and raised in Wyandotte County. Melissa is a fourth-generation Dotte. Melissa attended Turner High School. Melissa graduated with an associate degree from Kansas City Kansas Community College, attended the University of Kansas School of Nursing where she graduated with a bachelor's degree, and after encouragement from a colleague, Melissa earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing. In 2020, she graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City with her Doctor of Nursing Practice to conclude her educational career.
Melissa is an experienced 24-year healthcare professional and for the last 12 years, she has practiced as a Nurse Practitioner in a Gastroenterology Practice located in Wyandotte County. Melissa has worked within Wyandotte County for the last 17 years.
Throughout her professional career, she has engaged leadership to apply innovative ideas which were critical in establishing recognition for women and furthering advanced practice providers. Melissa was nationally recognized by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners as the Nursing Advocate for Kansas in 2017. Melissa currently serves on the Kansas State Board of Nursing since July 2021. Melissa is the current Chair of the Practice Committee and Advanced Practice Committee.
Melissa was elected 11/8/2022 to represent House District 37. She is the first Nurse Practitioner to be elected to the House in the state of Kansas.
